Microsoft MS DOS/95/98/me: Wrong fonts displaying

204| Fri, 06 Jun 2008 11:51:00 GMT| chris| Comments (9)
Some fonts are displaying wrongly on my computer. It seems to be mostly in
the place of where a sans serif type font would be used. I've tried
re-installing windows but it hasn't helped.
It happens in windows help files, only in the contents box on the left hand
side, and several other programs, usually in text boxes.
It also happens on some websites, for example the whole of wikipedia.com is
displayed in 'peinaud', and is quite unreadable.
It seems to substitute the fonts randomly, with fonts like 'space toaster'
and 'peinaud'.
I have no idea how to fix this. Does anyone else?

Try entering tweakui + xp in Google to find the TweakUI utility for XP.

It has a Repair => Fonts folder option that might fix the problem.

Sorry, it's TweakUI for Windows 98, not XP.

Enter tweakui + "windows 98" - as is.

1. Test for hijackers and other malware.
2. If you had not reinstalled the OS, I would suggest SFC.EXE
= System File Checker to check c:\windows\fonts\*.fnt
-- but the reinstallation has probably rewritten your
source file of correct Win98 components.
2b. Just in case, you should verify / Properties of folder
c:\windows\fonts and ensure it is attributed as a System folder.

Perhaps a new Theme/Scheme will get it right...
To install Desktop Themes, if they are not already in the Control Panel
or in the START menu...
1. START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup
tab.
2. Check "Desktop Themes"; click "Details"; check the themes you want;
"OK" twice.
3. Perhaps, re-boot.

Some themes require "high color". To get "high color":
1. Right click the Desktop & select Properties
2. Click the "Settings" tab
3. Use the "Colors" dropdown menu to select "high color"
4. Be prepared. It may ask your permission to restart the computer.

I understand that's best; however, it can also be done at: "R-Clk
Desktop, Properties, Appearance tab, & select a different 'Scheme' in
the dropdown selector". This will also get the fonts, colors, et al,
right, across applications, without trying to micro-manage inside the
"Item" dropdown menu, which one may live to regret.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

Oh. I thought for a moment he was the boy named Sue! OK, then.
