well if you are always trying out software that ends up runing
your system...
you can always boot to dos and then run scanreg /restore
also...while your system is running correctly you can also run sfc
and update all signatures so that you can always restore at a later point
otherwise, you can clone your drive and restore from backup

David, for starters, get Spybot Search & Destroy and check for problems.
IF you are NOT behind a router and/or GOOD software firewall, you very
likely have picked up adware / spyware along the way of all your downloads.
Avoid downloading ANYTHING that makes changes to IE, including the Yahoo!
toolbar!! (If it ain't broke, don't fix it is even truer today than ever
with all the crap trying to jump on your pc and use it as much as you!) ;)

Search for a utility that will do an image backup. Then, before trying out
this suspect software, create an image backup. If the installation fails,
restore to exactly how you were before.
If the problem is being caused by something other than installing rogue
software, then you need to find and fix the cause - prevention is better
than any available cure. It is definitely not normal for files to just go
missing.
