Microsoft MS DOS/95/98/me: There's got to be a better way... (FRUSTRATED)

  • david_nj_7_mailbolt_com / 204 / Fri, 27 Mar 2009 05:27:00 GMT / Comments (5)
  • Recently... I have been having issues with various DLL files that will
basically paralyze my sytem for weeks at a time. It is really getting
to me. I know I use an older operating system (Win98se) and I do enjoy
downloading and trying new programs but in past years I have never had
    these issues.

And... anytime any of these issues occur, virtually all of the programs
that come packaged with Windows NEVER seem to work. Whether or not its
SCAN-DISK, sacnreg /restore, scanreg /fix ... etc... etc... they never
seem to get the job done.

Perhaps there is a utility out there, one that I'm unaware of, where
you can GO BACK to before you installed the software and restore the
computer to that point. I know XP has that feature, or so I'm told, but
is there any program, maybe even a 3rd party app that can help you do
    that with Win98se.

I am so damn frustrated here. Yes... I have made some rather poor
decisions in my PC life but there has to be a better way of restoring
DLL files that, where even one of them, will paralyze a system and
    render it useless.

Is there... perhaps a program/CD/floppy out there that will enable
someone to replace these missing DLLs without having to reinstall the
whole operating system? I lost my Windows98se CD... but can't you get
just the DLLs and put them back on your system?

I am sorry for ranting here. I am just so sick and tired of having no
computer for weeks at a time because of one or two missing files. I
know I have to change some of my ways, but when I DO goof up... It
would be so great to have something there to help fix the problem
without going through hours and hours of trial and error.

Thanks so much guys... for all of your help.

    DAVID

    1. What I do is use BootIt NG ( http://www.bootitng.com ), or BING for short.
It's primary function is as a boot manager, but it comes with a nice
partition manager and imaging capability as well. So here's what I do (and
would do if I was in your shoes).

You install BING, preferebaly in its own partition. Even though you may not
be dual or multi-booting, it will prove very useful. If your current OS is
consuming all the HD space, you'll have to resize (i.e., reduce the size) of
that partition slightly, to make room for the BING partition (only needs
      about 8-16mb).

Once BING is installed and your system is configured to boot Win98, you can
do the following. Most ppl are using very large HDs these days. Most times
far more than they can reasonably consume for a long time. The typically OS
partition is setup to consume ALL of the free space, which ends up being a
waste. I suggest REDUCING the size of the OS partition considerably.
Additionally, ideally you want your DATA (word and excel docs, photos,
audio/video files, etc.) on a SEPARATE partition. By doing so, you can make
your OS partition MUCH smaller. And if it's much smaller, it makes imaging
that OS much faster and more practical. You then store your OS images on
that same HD using the free space you just free'd up, OR perhaps an external
USB HD enclosure, or even to DVD/CD. You then can make fast backups of your
WORKING OS prior to any experimentation. If those experiments fail, you can
always delete that partition and restore from a saved image. But the key to
making it practical and efficient is getting that DATA *off* your OS
      partition!!!

Why don't I use XP's restore feature (obviously doesn't apply to Win98, but
some will still wonder)? Because a) I don't know what the restore actually
does, what it does and doesn't save, and therefore I'm never 100% sure it
restore under ALL conditions, and b) it's just easier under most
circumstances to do a FULL partition backup. You can use that backup to
install MULTIPLE instances of Win98 as well. Here's where the
dual/multi-boot function adds value. Besides the imaging features and
techniques I've described, you could also have 2, 3 or more instances of
that same Win98 partition, concurrently! Then boot each independently. Use
one to experiment, the other for daily usage. When experiments succeed,
only then install them on the other installation. Or you could maintain one
installation for daily work, the other optimized for gaming. Lots of
options. The only real limitation w/ Win98 is that it can only be loaded
from a maximum distance from the head of the HD (can't remember exactly, but
might be 8GB or so, I'd have to check). That's another reason to keep the
OS *small*, so you keep more instances of more OS's within such limitations.
Fortunately, XP doesn't seem to have these same limitations, I'm able to
load it from almost anywhere, no matter the size of the HD (yippee).

It may sound a bit confusing at first, but the gist of my argument is that
too many ppl have not designed their HD installation optimally. With the
right design and tools, it can make life a LOT easier. I use the above
techniques ALL THE TIME. I routinely backup my OS installation before
installing software, so I can simply play/experiment in complete safety. If
I don't like the results, I can restore to the prior image in literally
minutes. Very, very easy. Been doing it more many years w/ great success.

You did not provide enough information for us
to help in any practical way.
      1. What is the main problem? You suggest "paralysis"
(system hang?) and mention DLLS -- but which DLLs?
What did you find out at the MS DLL help site
      http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/ ?
      2. System repair is difficult without a system disk.
If you did not copy yours before losing it, is it not worth
      buying another?
      3. Practical help may also require knowing your PC's
description (speed, RAM, free disk space) and your
normal practice (disk cleanup, antivirus protection etc.)

TotalUninstall. Can restore reg entries, delete added files but cannot
put back files deleted by an install.

Sure. Just Google for them. Might even be in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP
