Microsoft IIS Development: XP newbie suffering numerous mmc or iis crashes - please help

I just moved from 98se up to XP Pro and the learning curve is kicking
my butt. Previously I was using the PWS 4.0 to locally test rather
simple ASP pages for my web site before uploading, and that's what I
can't seem to get working in XP. I realize there's a whole lot more
to XP pro I will need to get to know and hope I'm not putting the cart
before the horse, but here goes.

I have installed IIS (or so I think) but can't get it to work (as far
as I can tell). When I go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
IIS and double click, nothing happens. If I try to double click FP
Server Extensions or Performance, or Computer Management, nothing
happens. In fact most of the options in Admin Tools seem to do
nothing but turn my cursor into an hourglass and slow system
performance way down - maybe they're not configured, or I don't need
them, I don't know how to use them or maybe it's a sign of a much
bigger problem.

Attempting to load an ASP page is sketchy at best. http://localhost &
http://computername give me a 404 error. http://127.0.0.1 sometimes
redirects me to http://localhost/iishelp/ and sometimes not. When I
can make it to the iis help pages, most of the links give me a 404 or
never actually load (progress bar at bottom moves at snail's pace and
eventually I give up.) I don;t need DNS service, but can't find
detailed info on how to setup LMHosts or a Hosts.sam file (a trick I
recall from 98) to have my network look at that rather than trying to
resolve a DNS. IE6 keeps giving me the Connect or Stay Offline
options whenever I try to browse to localhost but the results are
inconsistent. Sometimes choosing Work Offline will load a page from
my intranet if I am calling a specific page by name, but all links
from that page bring up the Connect or Stay Offline options, and
Neither option will successfully load the linked page. Either one
gives me a 404 error.

Task Manager doesn't identify any app as "not responding" but
performance seems slow and when I try to shutdown, I get various mmc
error messages - all of which I have submitted (none of which I
recall). I also am prompted to save a file upon shutdown. The
default directory for the save is "Administrative Tools" and the file
extension is .msc

What the heck is going on? I have searched the MS KB to no end and
can't find any simple to understand instructions on how to get IIS
happy with my system.

My Config:
1.7 Athlon
30 gig HD
256 MB ram
XP Pro SP1 (+all recent fixes and critical updates)
56K dial up modem for my internet
On board nic (not in use at moment)

Quite simply, I wanted to setup IIS for my intranet, choose my default
web directory on my local HD, and have IE display the default.asp page
in that directory when I use the URL /localhost.

What am I doing wrong and what is with MMC crashing all the time? I
am beginning to feel like a complete XP reinstall is in order but I'd
like to avoid that if possible. Any advice or resources would be
greatly appreciated!

Thank You.
Jim

Not being able to open any of the MMC in Administrative tools is not good.
If we can't get into IIS MMC then there is no way to tell what could be
causing the ASP problem.

You may want to post your question in the Windows newsgroup since there may
be something deeper than just IIS at this point.

You can also try to create a new MMC and add the IIS snap-in to see if you
can access it that way.

Create the Microsoft Management Console
---
1. click Start, click Run, type mmc in the Open box, and then click OK. A
new, blank MMC console window appears.
2. To add a snap-in to the MMC:
3. Click File, then click Add/Remove Snap-in to open the Add/Remove Snap-in
dialog box.
4. Click Add.
5. In the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box, double-click the item you want
to add. If a wizard appears, supply the information required in the wizard
windows.
6. Add Administrative Tools components from the list of snap-ins (we added
a couple of others that weren't components by default)
7. Select Local Computer, after adding all selected snap-ins, then close
the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box.
8. Click OK on the Add/Remove Snap-in box - snap-in items appear in the
Console

Save the Microsoft Management Console
--
1. Click File, then click Save.
2. Enter a name for the file (Windows XP automatically adds the extension

Hi Miriam,

Thanks for your suggestion, but I could not create a new mmc either.
It still just hangs. At this point I think I have only one real
option. Format & reinstall XP. It's behavior is just too weird and
sporadic to troubleshoot, I think.

Many thanks!
Jim

Generally unintall/reinstall is a last resort but I have to agree with you
on this. If we cannot create a new MMC and we cannot open any of the MMC
within Administrative tools we could be troubleshooting for a while. The
only other thing I could suggest before the uninstall would be to download
MMC and see if that works.
